As you may well know we haven’t won a race since last March when Gary won the Canadian Championship in Beausejour.  Well the drought is over and oh how nice it is to have that monkey off our backs!

Last weekends race was held in my old stomping grounds of Forest Lake, Minnesota.  It was a first time event there for the WSA and the show was awesome.  Saturday brought about some very fast and competitive Open 600 class racing where Gary and Dustin were in a tie for number one qualifier.  We got a sweet hole-shot and started to make a real comfortable lead until someone got turned over in corner 2.  After seeing this I had deja vu all over again because Gary has been in the lead a number of times this season only to lose the race after the sleds re-grouped within a sled length of each other for the restart.

This time he said no way is this happening to me again!  The race was close and Dustin drove like an animal to try and catch Gary, but in the end Gary won, thus finally ended our gloomy and winless streak of 6 races!

Unhappy with his second place finish Dustin petitioned successfully to have the track reshaped to better suit his driving style and threw on dozens of laps to get his set up just right.  Now this really didn’t affect our chances on Sunday because our sleds handle very good if nothing else.  But anyway, because of the narrowed corners and the lack of racing lines through them, there was some serious bumping and banging that went on on Sunday and we fell victim to a broken lower a-arm which ended our chances of sweeping the weekend.

So what to do now?  Move on and savor the good times again.  It has been so long since we have won a race that I almost forgot how sweet it really is.  Not to mention that early saturday Gary made a bet with the team that we could have all the Premium Grain-Belt we could handle if he won!  An offer of his which I immediately took him up on following the race!  So things are good once again.  But that hardly means that we will stop trying as hard as we have been this season to win all the races we are in.

This weekend we will depart from our much beloved gang at the WSA races to meet up with our Wisconsin domiciled group that is the USSA.  In Weyauwega, WI there will be some fine oval racing.  But whats more is that Gary’s oldest boy Dayton will be running his own “championship” in the last snow-cross race he will run as a 5 year old before he can move up to Champ 120.  Pretty exciting stuff I know!

So if you are going to the fine race that WSA will be hosting in McGreggor, MN; the always glamorous Grand Prix de Valcourt, or to the special event in Weyauwega, WI, be sure to have a great time and support those that support our sport.  Without sanctioning bodies with all of their staff, race promoters and all of their volunteers, or racers with all of their slaves, we simply would not be able to do what we love the most and that is racing on frozen ice in front of people.  As lame as that may sound, I’ll take that any day over sitting at home or trail riding all winter!

Have a great week and see you at the races!
